What Is Smart Roaming and Why Does It Matter?
Smart Roaming lets you use your Smart SIM card outside the Philippines. Calls, texts, and mobile data all of it works on your original number, without buying a local SIM in every country you visit.
The biggest win? You keep your number. Banks can still send you OTPs. Friends can still reach you. Your boss can still (unfortunately) call you.
Smart’s roaming network covers over 180 destinations worldwide, which honestly covers most places you’d realistically travel to.

How to Activate Roaming Smart SIM (Prepaid)
Here’s the thing: you need to do this before you leave the Philippines. Don’t wait until you’re at the airport or worse, already abroad.
Check your load balance
Make sure your Smart Prepaid SIM has an active balance. No specific minimum is required anymore, but having at least ₱50–₱100 is a good idea.
Text ROAM ON to 333
Just send a simple text:
Wait for the confirmation SMS from Smart. Once you get it, you’re good.
Alternative: dial *333
Not a fan of texting? Dial *333 and select “Check My Roaming Status” from the menu. You can activate from there, too.
Turn on Data Roaming & Restart
After landing abroad, turn on Data Roaming in your phone settings (more on this below). Then restart your phone; this helps it connect automatically to one of Smart’s partner networks.
Subscribe to a Roam Surf package
Before you start browsing, register for a data roaming pack on the GigaRoam website (gigaroam.smart.com.ph). Pick your destination country, choose a daily or multi-day plan, and you’re set. Without a promo, standard roaming rates can get expensive fast.
How to Activate Smart Roaming (Postpaid)
Good news if you’re on a postpaid plan, roaming is usually automatically enabled on Smart Postpaid accounts. But it’s still worth double-checking before you fly.
Use the Smart App
Open the Smart App on your phone → tap on your account → look for the Roaming section. You can check and activate from there.
Call *888
Dial *888 (or *800 if you’re on an Infinity plan) and follow the prompts to confirm your roaming is active.
Already abroad and forgot?
It happens. Call Smart’s toll-free roaming hotline: +63 2 8848 8878. They can activate it remotely. You can also reach them through Smart’s Contact Support page online.
Once you’ve confirmed roaming is on, register for a GigaRoam data package to avoid high standard charges eating into your postpaid bill.
How to Activate Roaming TNT (Talk ‘N Text)
Good news for TNT subscribers, the process is almost the same as Smart Prepaid. TNT and Smart share the same network, so roaming activation works the same.
Do it before leaving the Philippines
The same rule applies. Don’t wait until you’re at the airport.
Text ROAM ON to 333
Text ROAM ON to 333 from your TNT number. Wait for the confirmation SMS. Your SIM becomes roaming-ready.
Register a data pack on GigaRoam
Choose your country, and pick a roaming bundle. Without a promo, standard rates apply and add up fast.
Turn on Data Roaming
Go to Settings → Mobile Networks (Android) or Cellular (iPhone) and toggle Data Roaming ON.
Restart your phone after landing
This connects your TNT SIM to a local network automatically.
Already abroad and forgot? Call Smart/TNT international hotline +63 2 8848 8878. Same support line handles both.
How to Turn On Data Roaming on Your Phone
Activating roaming on Smart’s end is only half the job. Your phone also needs to have Data Roaming turned on in its settings. Here’s how to do it on the two most common phones:
For Android
Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Toggle Data Roaming ON
For iPhone
Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Cellular Data Options → Toggle Data Roaming ON
Once you land abroad and restart your phone, it should automatically connect to a local partner network. If it doesn’t, go to Settings → Mobile Networks → and manually select a network from the list.
Smart Roaming Packages: What Are Your Options?
Smart offers the Roam Surf lineup for roaming subscribers. These are daily and multi-day data bundles designed to keep your costs predictable. The three main tiers are:
You register for these through the GigaRoam website or the Smart App. Select your destination country first, not all plans are available in every country, so check before you travel.
And yes, Smart supports LTE and 5G roaming depending on the local network. So if you’re in a country with solid 5G infrastructure, you might actually get faster speeds than you’re used to back home.
Common Roaming Problems (And How to Fix Them Fast)
No signal after landing?
First thing, restart your phone. Then go to Settings → Mobile Networks → and manually select a network. Don’t just wait for auto-connect; sometimes it takes a nudge.
Mobile data not working?
Check two things: (1) Is Data Roaming turned ON in your phone settings? (2) Do you have an active Roam Surf subscription? Both need to be in place for the data to work.
Can’t send SMS?
Switch your network mode to 3G temporarily. Some partner networks in certain countries only support SMS over 3G bands. You can change this in Settings → Mobile Networks → Network Mode.
Phone battery draining super fast?
This is normal when roaming, your phone works harder to find and maintain a signal. Bring a power bank. Seriously. Also, turn off background app refresh and limit apps that use data in the background.
Need to load your Smart SIM while abroad?
You can top up remotely using GCash, online banking apps, or ask someone back home to load your number through a retailer. Your Smart Balance transfers work internationally.
Tips to Get the Most Out of Smart Roaming
A few things that’ll save you time, money, and stress:
- Always activate roaming before leaving the Philippines. Doing it abroad is possible, but annoying.
- Subscribe to Roam Surf before your flight, don’t wait until you land.
- Turn off background app data to stretch your roaming data further. Social media apps are the biggest culprits.
- Save +63 2 8848 8878 in your phone before you travel, that’s Smart’s international roaming hotline.
- Keep your Smart number active even when you’re not traveling. Use it at least once every few months so it doesn’t deactivate.
- Enable Wi-Fi calling when available; it lets you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi without touching your roaming balance.
